Whether your grass is starting to look patchy or you’re landscaping your garden, a new lawn could be a great option. It can be hard to find grass that can withstand the variable Australian climate, and that’s where couch grass comes in. For a lush and full-looking lawn, why not choose couch grass to revitalise your garden and keep it looking healthy and inviting again? Let’s find out more about it below.

What Is Couch Grass?

Couch grass is a wonderful evergreen option that excels in warmer climates. This makes it perfect for Australian gardens and land as it can thrive in hotter areas. In fact, it needs around six hours of direct sunlight a day in order to stay healthy.

Couch grass is known for how quickly it spreads, a feature which means it can create beautiful thick lawns for you to enjoy relatively fast. It can’t survive in shade or areas where there is frost or soil that doesn’t drain well. However, even after frost damage, simply watering the area should revive the grass since it is incredibly durable and fast-growing.

How To Grow Couch Grass

The best time to grow couch grass is in spring or at the start of summer. First, you will need to clear any previous vegetation or debris from the area. Then, when it comes to planting the seed, you will need to break up around three inches of soil before sprinkling the grass seed throughout the desired area. Following this, rake them in and cover the area with mulch to make sure the seeds are protected from scavengers such as birds and give them the best chance at growth.

How To Look After Couch Grass

The first step to looking after couch grass is to make sure you plant it in an appropriate area. Ensure that the soil will get at least six hours of sunlight a day and that the soil drains, as having water sitting amongst the roots will cause them to rot.

Then, you will need to water it correctly and possibly even add fertiliser to keep it lively. This should be done fairly regularly during the growing season with an organic fertiliser. Once your grass is thriving, you can mow it when it reaches around 4 inches and cut it down to around half the height. Couch grass is usually best kept short and regulated but this is, of course, at your discretion.

How Often Should I Water Couch Grass?

If you are growing couch grass from seed, to begin with, you will need to water the area twice a day but fairly lightly to make sure they stay damp. This should be done for around 10 to 14 days, until the seeds have germinated. After this, you will only need to water the grass about three or four times each week to keep it thriving; however, once germinated, you should water them more heavily.
